Abstract

Everyday objects portray a diverse set of interaction possibilities due to their vast range of physical affordances. Taking inspiration from this, we introduce Captibles: 3D-printed, modified everyday objects, having multiple IDs, that can bring rich, tangible functionality to smartphones. We contribute a method to achieve multiple IDs on capacitive screens required to utilize the full potential offered by an everyday object. We show the feasibility and illustrate diversity through eight novel implementations and one re-implementation. Through our work, we identify different design considerations required to utilize a day-to-day object as a tangible controller on a smartphone.
